CRM 2011 UR11 IFD – Could not find GUID for server

After installing CRM 2011 Update Rollup 11 for several customers, we have encountered an error in those customer environments that are utilizing an IFD (Internet Facing Deployment). After the update, when trying to access CRM externally, users are met with an “Unexpected Error” screen.

When looking at the Event Viewer, the following error is being thrown: Could not find GUID for Server.

Microsoft is aware of this issue, and supposedly has a hotfix for this issue, however, we were not able to procure a working version of the hotfix. As a workaround, you can adjust the Anonymous Authentication settings for the CRM web application in IIS.

To make these changes, follow the steps below:

  1. Open IIS Manager on the CRM server.
  2. Click on the “Microsoft Dynamics CRM” website in the list of sites.
  3.  Double-click on the “Authentication” icon in the Features view
  4. In the list of authentication types, click the “Edit” action in the actions pane.
  5. Select “Application Pool Identity”  under the edit screen.

Once these steps are complete, perform an IIS reset on both the CRM and ADFS servers.

The external access to CRM should work now once this workaround is complete.
